The records in this inventory date from 1792 and "include records of the Office of the Secretary of War, principally of the Division of Requisitions and Accounts, inherited by the Office of the Chief of Finance; records of the Director of Finance; records of the Office of the Chief of Finance, several series of which are continuations of the records of the Division of Requisitions and Accounts; records of the Budget Officer of the War Department; and records of the War Credits Board." "After the issuance of a preliminary inventory, it is sometimes necessary to bring the information up to date before further study can be made. Dates or quantities of records may need to be corrected, or entries for additional series may need to be inserted." The supplement to the inventory takes care of any such changes. "Additional entries bear entry numbers to which suffixes A, B, C, and so on have been added to indicate the most appropriate place in the original issuance for their insertion."
