CD: Preliminary Inventory of the Records of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer: Record Group 111, No. 155, plus Supplement - Mabel E. Deutrich. The records described in this inventory consist of textual records, photographs, motion pictures, and maps. "The textual records are divided for convenience' sake into three roughly chronological periods that reflect the varying fortunes of the Corps: the period between the appointment of a Signal Officer in 1860 and the initiation of the Corps' meteorological activities in 1870; the period between 1870 and 1890, the documentation for which is fragmentary because of the transfer of most of the records for that period to the Weather Bureau; and the period from 1890 to 1940. The actual dates of the records vary slightly at times from these dates." The supplement was prepared to take care of any needed corrections or any additional series that needed to be inserted. "Additional entries bear entry numbers to which suffixes A, B, C, and so on have been added to indicate the most appropriate place in the original issuance for their insertion."
