"This second volume covers the time from 1718 to 1740, inclusive, the material increasing in volume, naturally, with the increase of population and the number and importance of estates; so that, undoubtedly, two or more volumes will be required to include the records for the remainder of the period up to 1771, when the Province was divided into counties and separate Probate Courts and registries soon after established."
These records were first published as Vols. 31-39 of the State Papers. The editors searched the files of York County, Maine, and Old Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk, and Middlesex Counties, Massachusetts in search of stray estates, and have included them in the present volume. The wills are transcribed in full, while all other documents are given in abstract form. A list of estates, an index of place names, and a full-name index complete this work.
