Our Maryland Heritage, Book 35: The Benson Families of Maryland

Mr. Hurley’s Our Maryland Heritage series continues with this book, which investigates the Benson family. It begins with a brief description of the Benson grants of arms in England; moves to the earliest colonial records, which feature indentured Bensons; and then reveals early records of Bensons in various Maryland counties. The meat of this book, however, is its focus on families from Montgomery County, even though it also includes family members found in other parts of Maryland. Additional chapters cover the descendants of Thomas William Benson, d. 1783; Thomas Benson, d. 1828; Jonathan Beall Benson, b. 1794; and William H. Benson, b. 1812. The final chapter contains miscellaneous information about members of the Benson family in Montgomery County which have not been connected to the families discussed in earlier chapters. Many of the generations are traced up to the present time. The data contained in this report has been prepared from information found in a variety of sources, including records found at the library of the Montgomery County Historical Society, such as family files, church and cemetery records, obituary collections and the published books and abstracts held by the library in their research collection; as well as the personal library of the author, and earlier family studies. Contains a bibliography and a fullname index.
