The Early History of Southampton, L. I., New York, with Genealogies - George R. Howell. Southampton was first settled in mid-1640 by a group from Lynn, Massachusetts. This excellent work provides a history of the early development of the community, with emphasis on the period prior to the American Revolution. Actually the work is about two-fifths history and three-fifths genealogies. The historical section also contains much material of genealogical interest, such as: resident lists for 1649, 1657, 1683, and 1698; identification of early lot owners; some cemetery inscriptions; and a few pages of vital statistics from the town books. The genealogies are alphabetically arranged and provide a wealth of data on hundreds of families. This work is cited in the Harvard Guide to American History. This reprint has been made from the revised and expanded second edition. (1887, 1989), 2012, 5½x8½, paper, 474 pp.
