This volume is the tenth in a series devoted to presenting a transcription of the surviving serial manuscript records for the town of Wilmington, Essex County, New York, in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains. The tax or assessment rolls, 1850-1869, are a rich source of information on adult males (and occasionally females) in the town of Wilmington. However, the information provided in these annual rolls is not consistent from year to year. For every year, the owner's name, acreage, value of real estate, and assessment is given for each piece of real estate, if the owner was a resident of the town. Non-resident owners are not identified, except in 1858. The names of assessors, Justices of the Peace, and Essex County Supervisors are also given for each annual roll. Information not consistently provided includes: the type of property; the business agent for a land owner; military rolls for 1852-1854, and 1868; military taxes assessed on adult males of military age 1850-58, 1860, and 1868; occasionally personal property tax; dog owner tax for 1857, 1862-1869; and much more. The tax records have been transcribed as presented. A full name index adds to the value of this work.
