Publishments, Marriages, Births and Deaths from the Earlier Records of Gorham, Maine

$26.00

This volume collects the vital records of the town of Gorham, Maine, drawn from the proprietor’s records of Gorham and old Gorhamtown and originally published between 1895 and 1897 in the Portland Evening Express. The text is divided into four registers. Publishments (marriage intentions) and Marriages which list the names of bride and groom, date of original publication or marriage, residence (if other than Gorham), and race (for non-whites), are arranged alphabetically by surname. Births of Children are arranged alphabetically by the name of the child, and include date of birth, parents’ names and residence (wherever known). The proprietor’s records included few notices of death, such that the Deaths section of this text has been compiled mainly from church records, newspaper notices and gravestone inscriptions. Information for the deceased varies, but in all cases includes the name of the deceased person and the date of their passing. Additional information regarding spouses, residences and age at time of death has been included (wherever known). The introduction to the text includes several historical abstracts from the first record book of Gorham, which commences with the very first town meeting.
