Lewis first published a 278 page history of Lynn in 1844 which forms the foundation for this vastly expanded edition by Newhall. It is fairly typical of New England town histories, touches on all the usual topics, and contains lists of residents and officials. The bulk of the volume is arranged in the form of year by year annals from 1629 to 1864. There are blocks of genealogical data on the residents scattered throughout, and there is also a chapter of biographical sketches.
