This guide to sources of genealogical information in the San Diego area includes libraries, archives, historical societies and government entities with birth, marriage, property, tax, census, hospital, death, probate, coroner, and other records; as well as books, photographs and other items of genealogical interest. Addresses, phone numbers and hours of operation for these facilities are included. The book also provides the names of some early Hispanic founders of San Diego and of some American and a few European men who married into these families, and discusses sources for the study of these individuals. Early burial locations for the Hispanic founders (Mission San Diego de Alcala, Presidio Hill near Old Town, El Campo Santo at Old Town, and Calvary/Mission Hills Cemeteries) and burial locations for early American and European settlers (Protestant Cemetery and the old Jewish cemetery at Point Loma and Protestant Cemetery at Old Town) are also discussed. Details are given about more recent cemeteries (Mount Hope, Greenwood, Holy Cross, Cypress View, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, and Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery). Books with cemetery inscriptions, cemetery maps, citations to sources and an index to historic names are also provided.
