The development of the fur trade, the European struggle for its control, and the involvement of Native Americans are discussed. Acting as middlemen for the colorful European trappers and traders who arose during this period, the Native Americans controlled the fur economy while Britain and France feuded. During this time the Hudson Bay Company came to prominence, squashing its smaller competitors. France ultimately lost the struggle for control and forfeited her empire in North America, while the British temporarily gained all.
