This is the first series of books to be published of Fisher Funeral Home records. Having been in continuous operation for 147 years, Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg is the oldest of its kind in the state of Mississippi. In addition to the burials of local residents, its records also show burial information for soldiers of both the North and South who died near Vicksburg before, during, and after the Siege of Vicksburg, together with pertinent military information. The records were maintained in book form, some books were kept at the funeral home itself and others were kept at the City Cemetery. This volume contains the records of the first three books, covering the years 1854 to 1867. Each record book's entries are arranged separately in alphabetical order and need no index. Supplemental indexes are given for Book I and Book III showing additional names found within the entries themselves. Other than the deceased's name, the entries include the date of death, age, cause of death, brief description of funeral arrangements and expenses, and in some cases, the physician's name.
