Centennial History of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of North Carolina, 1924-2024

$24.00

The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of North Carolina was organized in 1924, holding its first meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Led for its first years by Burnham Standish Colburn (1872–1959), a Biltmore Estate administrator, banker, and engineer, the North Carolina Society sponsored numerous projects and publications, of which the Mayflower Cup (1931–2002) was the most well-known. In addition to Colburn, Senator Sam Ervin, Laura Holmes Reilley, and Professor Sturgis E. Leavitt served as Governor; a biographical note for each of the first twelve Governors is provided. Subdivided into Colonies (chapters) during the Second World War, the Society now has seven covering the whole state, with a “virtual” chapter established during the COVID pandemic.

Chapters include the story of the foundation, the history of the Mayflower Cup, the Society’s publications and paraphernalia, scholarship grants, a review of the Colonies and recent restructuring. Six appendices include a chronological list of all elected officers of the North Carolina Society as well as members of the North Carolina Society who have served as officers of the national General Society, all winners of the Patterson Cup and the Mayflower Cup, and plans for the future. A full name and place index contributes to the value of this work.
