$29.00

The ancestors of Sir Richard Saltonstall resided for centuries in the parish or vicarage of Halifax, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The name is derived from Saltonstall, a village or hamlet in the township of Warley in that parish. The town name is recorded as early as the 1200s and had been in existence for some time at that date. In the early 1300s, we first find records of Saltonstall ancestors, beginning with Thomas de Saltonstall and his two sons, John and Richard. Centuries later, Sir Samuel Saltonstall appears to have taken an interest in the settlement of Virginia, and was the executor of Captain John Smith. Sir Richard Saltonstall was the first named associate to the six original patentees of Massachusetts Bay in the early 1600s and by 1700 we find Gordon Saltonstall in Connecticut where he was born in 1666. He was governor from 1708 until his death. Other Saltonstalls are described in other part of the colonies.
