The town of Brookneal in Campbell County, Virginia, was established in 1802 from the lands of John Brooke and his wife, Sarah Neal. The Ginther family established The Union Star in 1906. The paper reported news and published obituaries from the town of Brookneal, as well as, Campbell, Halifax, Charlotte and Pittsylvania Counties. The obituaries preserved on these pages are a treasure trove of genealogical information. Obituaries are arranged chronologically and vary greatly in length, but typically include the name of the deceased, date and place of death, cause of death, age at death, and names of relatives. Sometimes the names of friends are also listed. Some obituaries include brief biographical sketches or tidbits of biographical information such as occupation, church membership, or military data. Information pertaining to funeral services and burial location is frequently given. A full name index adds to the value of this work.
