Rockbridge County, located in the western part of Virginia, was created in 1778 from Augusta and Botetourt Counties. Between 1851 and 1885, 4,8437 were performed by 335 ministers. The entries herein were copied from microfilm of the typewritten records.
“There were two marriage books copied, Marriage Register 1, 1778 to 1865 and Marriage Register 1-A, 1865 to 1889. From 1851 to 1865 only the names of the bride and groom, her father, date of marriage and minister were given. After 1865, full information was usually given. The most complete information from both books was used. … The information is entered across the line as follows: name of groom; age; marital status; place of birth; place of residence; occupation; second line: name of father; name of mother; date of marriage; minister; third line: name of bride; age; marital status; place of birth; place of residence; fourth line: name of bride’s father; bride’s mother; where married or other notes. … The index consists of the bride’s names, plus any other surnames that were different from either the brides or the grooms.”
