In order to establish an equitable distribution of public funds the State of Texas conducted a special census of free white school children aged six to sixteen in the years 1854 - 1855. In a few counties the local census takers only reported some aggregate statistical data, but in the most counties they reported the names of both parents and children. All of the extant data is presented in this compilation of forty-eight counties begining with Ellis and ending with Wharton. Missing are the data for Henderson, Hunt, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Kaufman, Navarro, Panola, Refugio, Williamson, and Wood counties for which statistical summaries were made, and all the counties with names begining with A-D for which the records have been totally lost. This is an important supplement to the first federal census of Texas in 1850. It is a substitute for the missing 1850 Tarrant County census and can identify families who moved to Texas between 1850 and 1855.
