Monroe County was created from Greenbrier County in 1799 and named for James Monroe, fifth President of the United States. Monroe is the home county of Andrew S. Rowan, of Spanish-American War fame, who is immortalized in Elbert Hubbard's classic A Message to Garcia. The county was also the site of the 1928 discovery of the 34.48 carat (6.896 g) Jones Diamond by Grover C. Jones and his son, William "Punch" Jones. These death records are part of the original listing for Virginia counties in 1853. At this time the State requested all births and deaths to be recorded, but it was not mandatory so many were not recorded. For each deceased, their age, date of death, location, cause and survivors are given. In many cases, the person who reports the death is also given. These are great resources for genealogical searching.
