Dallas County, formed from Polk County in 1842, was originally named Niangue County. In 1844, the boundaries slightly changed and the name changed to Dallas. The courthouse burned in October 1863, and burned a second time in July 1864 when all the records were destroyed. The county suffered a third fire on 3 September 1867 when the replaced records were burned also.
