Buchanan County, located on the Missouri River in west Missouri, was created 31 December 1838 from the Platte Purchase. Originally, it was named Roberts County in honor of Hiram Roberts, one of the early settlers. In 1839, the name was changed to Buchanan in honor of James Buchanan, a U.S. Senator and later President of the United States.
