New Madrid County, Missouri, located on the Mississippi River in the southeastern portion of the state, was created in 1812 and named after the Spanish District of the region when Spain ruled the lower portion of the Mississippi Valley. It was called "Nuevo Madrid" after Madrid Spain. In this region in the 19th century were over 1000 earthquakes, the largest occurring in February of 1812 with a 9.0 on the Richter Scale. The historical section of this volume covers the time up to the publication of the original in the mid-1880s. The biographical sketches were submitted by the families themselves.
