Located in lower east Tennessee, Monroe County was created in the Treaty of Calhoun on November 13, 1819 with the Cherokee. It was named for President James Monroe and included some the town of the Overmountain Cherokee scattered along the Little Tennessee River and Tellico River including Chota, Tanasi [the name that gave rise to the term Tennessee] and Great Tallico. In 1756, the British from Charleston, South Carolina, built Fort Loudoun to protect the Cherokee from the white encroachment later killed off by the Cherokee. This volume contains the earliest Marriage records for the County.
