Carter County, located in the upper east Tennessee area, was created in 1796 out of the Washington District of North Carolina and was named for General Landon Carter who had served as the president of the Watauga Association. These records are early in the history of the county and serve as some of the best records for the day-to-day activities of the county. Many of the records found here are not found anywhere else in the area and serve to place many people in their time and place.
