Roanoke County, located in southwestern Virginia, is at the junction on the migration at the end of the Shenandoah Valley where settlers had to decide if they were going south in the Carolinas or wester ward into Kentucky or Tennessee. This 1840 census, like all of the United States Census for this year, list only the names of the head of households. Also included are the age/sex of others living in that household. In addition, we have included the occupations, personal data like blind, deaf, idiot, etc. and the number of students in school with the type of school if there is a teacher in the home. The 1840 census also gives the name and age of those who are pensioners in the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812.
