Located in south central Virginia, Patrick County was made a county in 1791 out of lands taken from Henry County. The 1850 census of any county is important due to the fact that for the first time, the names of everyone living in the household are given with their age and occupation. In addition, the occupation and valuation of real and personal property of the head of the household is given with the place of their birth. For the genealogical researcher, this is extremely important to establish names within a household.
