Wythe County is one of the southwestern Virginia counties that lies along the migration route from the Shenandoah Valley into Kentucky and Tennessee. This transcription of the 1840 census includes all of the vital information found in the census except the sex and age of the slaves. Included are the names of the head of households with the age and sex of those living within that household. Also included are the records found on page two of the census which includes the occupations of those within the house, deaf, blind, etc., the names and ages of the pensioners of the American Revolution and War of 1812 as well as the number of scholars in a school, if the head of the house is a teacher.
