Henry County was created in 1777 from the lands of Pittsylvania County and named for Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia who lived for a time in the county. This transcription of the 1840 census gives the names of the heads of the households with all other individuals being listed by sex/age groups. Added to this are the entries from page two of the census, the occupations, personal information like "deaf, blind, etc" and the school records. There is a listing of those who were living in the county as pensioners of the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Their name and age are given in a separate column in the census.
