Franklin County, located in the Mountain Empire region of southwestern Virginia, is one of the early counties in this section of the state. This 1840 census gives only the names of the head of the household, but all others are listed by age/sex. We have included the age and sex of the freed colored in the household as well as the occupations, the personal data like, blind, deaf, etc. There is a listing of those pensioners of the War of 1812 and the American Revolution by name and age. There is also a listing of those who were school teachers giving the kind of school with the number of scholars.
