Scott County, located in southwestern Virginia, is part of the Mountain Empire area of the state. The 1840 census gives only the names of the heads of households, but there is a great deal of information can be gleaned from the records other than names. There is the age/sex/race of other individuals in the household as well as occupations. Then there is the personal data like those living in the household who were pensioners in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 as well as those that were deaf, blind and/or idiots. There were teachers given with the number of students and the types of schools they taught. Study this census carefully for a great deal of information.
