Clarke County is found in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. This 1840 census is a transcription of both pages of that record as found in the original form. The records give the name of the head of the household and the ages/sex of each of the persons living in that household. Included are the sex/ages of those freed colored in the household, occupation of the household, personal records like blind, deaf, insane, etc. There is also a listing by name and age of those pensioners who fought in the American Revolution or the War of 1812. In the case where there is a school in the household, the type of school and the number of scholars is given as well.
