Created in October 1777 in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Rockbridge was one of the most important counties in this section. With lands taken from both Augusta and Botetourt Counties, Rockbridge was named for Natural Bridge located in the southern part of the County. In 1782, when this tax list was created, this section of the state was the frontier for the English colonies along the eastern sea board. Just one hundred years prior to the creation of the county, the concept was that the Pacific Ocean was only a seven to eight day march westward from Jamestown, the capital of the Colony at the time. By 1782, there were hundreds of Europeans migrating to the colonies to get away from the poverty, diseases and lack of land for them to occupy. They came in droves for the free or cheap land and so they came to the frontier to be the self sufficient people they wanted.
