Since Summers County, West Virginia was formed in 1871, this is the first census. Census records are taken every 10 years. Summers County contains six districts including the following: Greenbrier, Green Sulphur, Talcott, Pipestem, Jumping Branch and Forest Hill. Greenbrier District contained the most families and includes the township of Hinton.
Each District has listing of families by name, sex, age, occupation and birthplace.
Some of the enumerators copied the names, apparently as they were pronounced to them. Many of the people could not read and write so it is the belief that some of the 1880 residents could not spell their own name.
