Fayette County was created in 1831 from parts of Greenbrier, Kanawha, Nicholas, and Logan Counties, and named in honor of the Marquis de la Fayette. In 1853, the state of Virginia authorized the counties to collect the births and deaths of each county. Many did and some did not since it was not mandatory. For the deceased the following is given: name, age, cause, date, location and some family information.
