Cabell County was created out of Kanawha County by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on January 2, 1809. It is located on the southwestern portion of the state bordering the Ohio River. It was named in honor of William H. Cabell, who was the Governor of Virginia at the time of the creation of the county.
