This is the first surviving census for Brooke County, Virginia [now West Virginia], since both the 1790 and 1800 censuses have been lost. Brooke was an important county on the western edge of the state and abutting the Ohio River. It was a major crossing point for settlers moving into eastern Ohio in the 1790s and early 1800s.
