The area in the extreme southwestern portion of Virginia served as an important staging region for settlers moving through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky and Tennessee. Unfortunately, the original marriage records are all missing for the early period save for the fragmentary book noted here. 159 marriages are recorded from a list of ministers' returns.
