Tom Green County, Texas was created in 1875 from the lands of Bexar County in central Texas with San Angelo as the county seat. The county was named for Thomas Green (1814-1864). He was born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee where he graduated from the University of Tennessee and came to Texas to help in that State’s struggle for independence. He served in the Mexican War, and was a Colonel in the Civil War. He was killed on 12 April 1864 at the Battle of Blair’s Landing by a cannon of a Federal gunboat on the Red River.
