Refugio County, Texas was created in 1826 as one of the old Mexican municipalities, therefore this is an important older county in Texas. This 1870 Census is a record of those who are living in the area at this time. There are twenty columns of information given in this record. They are:
- Dwelling/House - Numbered in order of visitation
- Families - Numbered in order of visitation.
- Every person named show place of abode on the 1st day of June 1870 was in this family.
- Age at last birthday. If under 1 year, give months in fractions, thus 2/12 for Feb.
- Sex - males [M] or females [F]
- Color - white [W], Black [B], Mulatto [m], Chinese [C], or Indian [I].
- Profession, occupation or trade of each person male or female.
- Value of real estate owned.
- Value of personal estate owned.
- Place of birth, naming State or Territory of US; or the country if of foreign birth.
- Father of foreign birth.
- Mother of foreign birth.
- If born within the year, state month [Jan., Feb., etc.]
- If married with year, state month [Jan., Feb., etc.]
- Attended School within this year.
- Cannot read
- Cannot write
- Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane or idiotic.
- Male citizens of the U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards
- Male citizens of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards whose right to vote is denied or abridged on other grounds than rebellion or other crimes.
[Editors note: most Confederates lost their right to vote just on the grounds of being a Confederate until they were all pardoned by the President and Congress.]
Remember that in transcribing all records of this nature, errors will occur in spite of the best efforts of the transcriber. Names may not have been spelled the way we spell them today, and they may have been un-readable in the original handwriting. Keep this in mind when using this material.
