Many of the commonwealth states established a system of recording birth records in the 1852 and 1853 era. This was done primarily to establish ownership of slaves. Each owner and parent was ask to voluntarily record the birth of their children and the children of slaves giving the date of birth, location and the parentage. In these records, you will find the maiden name of the mother which is very helpful in research. This is a very vital bit of information for those doing genealogical research into their lineage.
