Vernon County, located on the southwestern side of Missouri, was created on the 17th of February 1851 and was named for Miles Vernon, a state senator from Laclede County from 1850-1860. The area was first established at Harmony Mission in 1821 by the United Foreign Missionary Society of New York. This was a school for the Osage Indians.
