Gonzales County is located in the south central portion of the state. The area in the county and surrounding area was named for Rafael Gonzales, governor of Coahulla y Tejas and settled by the first Anglo-American community west of the Colorado River by the 1825 time period when Green DeWitt petitioned for a land grant to establish the colony from the Mexican government. Like most of the counties in this area of Texas, it was established in 1836 so that when Texas was annexed by the United States, it was well established. It is interesting to note that Gonzales County was the seat of the Gonzales College founded by slave owning planters and was the first institution in Texas to confer a Bachelor of Arts degree to women. All through the history of Texas and the United States, this area has played an important part in that history. This volume is the story of Gonzales County and its early residents.
