Lavaca County, located in what was southwest Texas in the 1890s when this volume was written, was created in 1846 and named for the Lavaca River that flows towards to Matagorda Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. In this volume there is a brief history of this county and the region around it in the southwestern section of the State. There is included a collection of biographical sketches of some of the early families that help to make Lavaca County what it is today.
