The Personal Property Tax Lists for the Year 1787 for Fauquier County, Virginia

The 1787 tax list is unique and a better substitute for the 1790 census of Virginia. It is the result of a law passed by the Virginia Assembly which mandated that the tax commissioner visit the residence of the taxpayer.

Most of the county booklets record only men over 21 by name, but Fauquier County gives the names of all males sixteen years and older.
