Although marriages were kept as a public record in Virginia prior to 1853, parents were not listed unless the bride or groom was under age. These notices provide additional details for marriages recorded elsewhere. In some cases they provide the only record of the nuptials. Notices are not limited to Richmond, but announce marriages that occurred throughout the state. Special Publication No. 10.
