Fort Bend County, Texas Biographies and History of Southwest Texas

$1200

Fort Bend County was located at the time of this publication in southwest Texas, but today it is in the southeast section of the state. The county was established in 1838 but prior to this time the area was inhabited by the Karankawa Indians. Anglo settlers began migration into this area around 1822 when a group of the Stephen F. Austin's colonists, headed by William Travis, built a fort at the present site of Richmond. This fort was called "Fort Bend" since it was built in the bend of the Brazos River. Richmond, the county seat, was created in 1837 along with 19 other cities and towns. Fort Bend County was created from parts of Austin, Harris and Brazoria counties. In this volume you have short biographical sketches of families there in the 1890s when the original was written and a short history of Southwest Texas. Each section has its own index.
