Jefferson County, Arkansas History and Biographical Sketches
Jefferson County, located in the southeastern portion of the state was created in 1829 and probably named for Thomas Jefferson. This material was originally published by Goodspeed Publishing in the late 1800's and this reprint contains memoirs and biographies of the early pioneers. Because the information was compiled by the referenced family, it should be very accurate and detailed. This volume also contains a brief history of the county as it developed up to the time this volume was written in the 1880s.
James C. Mitchell, one of the leading citizens and a prominent planter of Jefferson County, was born in that county December 25, 1846, and is a son of John B. and Mary (Dereuisseaux) Mitchell, of Arkansas. The father was a successful and well known planter, who died on the farm where his son now resides, in 1847, leaving his family in a more than comfortable condition, as far as wealth was concerned. ...etc...
