Rapides Parish, located in the central portion of the state was first under French rule. It was first settled in 1763 by the Apalachee tribe with permission of Governor Kerlerec as the Native American were fleeing the British and their Creek allies from Florida. In 1790s Alexander Fulton has a Spanish land grant within Rapides Parish and he laid out the future city of Alexandria in 1805. Rapides Parish was created in 1807 by the government of the Territory of Orleans.
