David Valentine Auxier found himself entangled in a war he despised, but did not shrink from doing his part in bringing it to an end. It cost him his young life, and a seventeen year old wife lost her husband just two months after were married. David had dreamed of "owning good lands in the west," and seemed to have the resources and abilities to see it through. A bullet through his right lung at the Battle of Saltville, Virginia, on October 2, 1864, ended that dream.
One hundred twenty-six years after David Valentine's death, Dave Auxier (the namesake author) rediscovered the place of the gravesite of his great, great uncle, and decided to relocate his remains to his family cemetery in Kentucky. This book is about the fulfillment of that. mission, with as many details of his short but significant life and military career as could be practicably included a short biography.
