Bedford Villages, Lost and Found: Volume 3

A decision was made by DAR to research villages which were large enough to have a post office as opposed to place names such as cross roads. The US Post Office records provided the name of the post office, date of establishment, the names of the post masters and the dates of their service as well as the location of the office. Over the years there have been 243 post offices in Bedford County, whereas the county now is served by only 12. The villages in this work will be arranged according to the post office by which they were served at the time they closed.
Every effort has been made to keep this a place of history, one of stores, schools, churches, taverns, mills, bridges, roads, name origin and the necessity which gave rise to a particular village in that place. It is not intended to include family genealogies, however names of persons associated with the village were encouraged. It is impossible to include the names of all residents in a village.
Because of the amount of material available for the entire county a decision was made to publish the entire work in three volumes. The first volume covered the town of Bedford and communities surrounding it. Volume II contains villages east of Route 122, while Volume III covers those villages west of Route 122. Additional information about the railroad has been included in Volume III because of its impact county wide.
