The Deeds of Halifax County, North Carolina, 1758-1771

$2400

This is the first volume of abstracted deeds for Halifax County.

Edgecombe County, dating from 1741, was the parent of Halifax County.  The town of Enfield hosted court for an area which contained, in the main, the present counties of Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, and parts of Wilson and Martin counties.  When Halifax County came into being in 1758, Tarboro was founded to become the county seat for Edgecombe, and the town of Halifax was established to become the county seat of the new Halifax County.  A portion of Halifax County became a part of Martin County when it was formed in 1774.

Deed books 1-6 now kept by Edgecombe County are for the entire Edgecombe Precinct until 1758.  Halifax County deeds begin with Deed Book 7, which is where these abstracts begin.

In addition to personal names, included in the index are geographical references (Rivers, Creeks, Swamps, Branches, Counties, States, Towns); grants are indexed, as are slaves (first name only).
