This is the fourth volume of deed abstracts for Halifax County. The records encapsulated within are the whole of Deed Book 18 (1796 - 1802). This deed book 18 is one of the larger ones for Halifax County, comprising 943 pages and is bound into two parts A and B at the Halifax County Court House.
You are dealing with the abstract of a copy. The original deed records for Halifax appear to have been copied in the 1890s and then destroyed in that period. Oral history says that the then Register of Deeds employed high school students to copy the records. It is obvious that in some cases, the originals were barely usable; in other cases, the copyist(s) miswrote what they read.
Provided are three (3) indices: A full name index; a place and other index; a slave name index.
